Abstract

Abstract

World Health Organization (WHO) reports that 300 million people globally experience mental disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, and dementia. Additionally, around 24 million people are diagnosed with schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a mental condition that can affect logical thinking and interfere with social interactions. About 70% of individuals with schizophrenia experience hallucinations, making it difficult for them to engage in social interaction and communication. Therefore, a caring attitude from nurses is crucial to facilitating effective communication in nursing care. This study aims to explore nurses' caring behavior and therapeutic communication with patients experiencing hallucinations at the Regional Psychiatric Hospital of Jambi Province. It employs a quantitative approach, involving 66 nurses selected using cluster random sampling. Data collection tools included the Caring Behavior Inventory (CBI) and a Therapeutic Communication instrument, analyzed using Spearman's rho test. The findings revealed that nurses' caring behavior was evenly split between good (50%) and less optimal (50%) categories, while most therapeutic communication strategies were classified as good (89.4%). A positive relationship was found between nurses' caring behavior and therapeutic communication strategies, with an r-value of 0.243 and a p-value of 0.049. Enhancing responsive approaches can improve nursing care quality for patients with hallucinations.
